Our Moving Tips

Make a list.

Write everything in your home down! You'll thank yourself later. Before you begin packing anything, create a record keeping system. You can place a number on EVERY box and list the exact contents on your list of that box onto your list. Be sure to be very specific on every item that is in your box.

If you have breakables in the box, it is best to place a large note to assure the movers are aware of the con

Have plenty of supplies.

You will need LOTS of boxes-probably more boxes than you think. Having enough boxes will make your life and your move a lot easier! If you are getting boxes from your local grocery store, just toss any leftovers. If you are purchasing your boxes, you can return the unused boxes.

You will want at least 5 – 10 boxes set aside to use for last minute items on the day of your move. Last minute items might include bedding, clothing, and cleaning supplies. You will need plastic packing tape to assure the boxes are secured.

Use unprinted newsprint (newspaper can stain your items) or packing paper or bubble wrap to wrap and cushion household good. Again, you'll need lots more supplies than you think, so get extra so the packing can go smoothly. Return any unused supplies after the truck is packed.

Color coordinate

It is best to designate a color for every room in your new home. You might choose orange for your kitchen, yellow for your dining room, etc.

Now apply various colored stickers onto each box near the box number. Now just place a matching color on the door in each of your rooms in your new home. This will eliminate the many questions that arise with those who are moving your personal belongings.

It is also best to have a sign in each room that says “Place boxes here”, this will keep the open space you need for your furniture and traffic areas.

Pack ahead

To save you time both the day before and on moving day, it is best to pack everything possible ahead of time. If it is summer you are able to pack all your winter items. The last few days before moving you should start to pack everything except the essentials. There is no sense having 5 radios or TV’s around the house for the last few days.

Pack up your bathroom (shampoo and other items) and just keep a travel cosmetic case to use for the last few days before your move. Even your wastebaskets can be packed by switching over to plastic grocery bags to collect trash.

Consolidate all cleaning supplies

If you need to clean the home you are moving from, put together your basic cleaning supplies and rags. Clean everything you can prior to your move including the inside of cupboards, windows, the oven etc.

As your movers empty each room just follow them with a vacuum to completely finish that room.

Use your luggage

Instead of letting your luggage out the door empty fill them with your sheets, clothing, towels and even your paper goods. Now you will have many of your essentials in a place that you can easily find

Safeguard valued items

Be sure to keep all your valuables such as silverware, antiques, jewelry and collections with you. Be sure to check with your homeowners insurance to understand how you are covered during the move. You may need additional coverage to assure your belongings are covered during the move. Find out what paperwork you will need such as appraisals, photos and receipts.

Keep important papers with you

All important papers should be kept with you during your move. This might include birth certificates, school records, taxes, mover bills, utility receipts, bank records, current bills, phone list, closing papers, realtor info, maps and others.
